24 Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.
25 The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:24-25 (NLT)
I believe this is a relevant message to us. We are currently in the worst global economic recession in history. While I cannot predict the financial state of every individual, I can safely say that collectively we are getting poorer by the day. At this stage, I suspect many believers are cutting down on their giving. Some may even stop giving altogether. You may be one of them. The purpose of this article is to tell you that this is a bad move. You may end up jeopardizing your future prosperity with this short-sighted move.
God wants all believers to be rich. If you have been reading the Bible, you should have been convinced beyond doubt of this truth. All Christians all called to be rich in every area of our lives. This includes having a lot of money. However, God’s way for us to get rich is totally different from the world’s way.
The above verses tell us of God’s way to enrich us. We get rich through giving. Verse 23 says give freely and become more wealthy, be stingy and lose everything. This means the more freely we give, the wealthier we will be. In contrast, should we opt to be stingy, we will end up losing everything. What is your choice? Do you want to be rich or poor? If you want to be rich, start giving. However, if you have committed to the Vow of Poverty, you should be stingy because God had promised that if you are stingy, you lose everything.
In Verse 24, we see the Law Of Sowing And Reaping explained in a very simple way. Do to others what you want others to do to you. If you are generous and give freely, you will receive a lot of riches and prosper. If you refresh others, you will be refreshed yourself. What do you want in life? Do you want to have a lot of money? Start giving money to those who are in need. Do you want to have good health? Help others to have good health. Are you looking for a potential life partner? Help your single friends to find their match. This law always works. Make use of it.
This is opposite from the way the world view riches. No wonder most human beings are still very poor despite the fact that the earth is filled with riches. They got Proverbs 11:24-25 in reverse order. Proverbs 11:24-25 is a law of nature like the law of gravity. It works for everyone who puts it to work.
What is your choice? Do you want to give freely or be stingy? You are putting Proverbs 11:24-25 to work. The result will be as stated in the above verses. Please note that God never instructs us on whether we must give freely or be stingy. God only told us the results of both actions. His intention is for us to look at the end results of both actions and decide for ourselves which result do we want. Then we can choose which action to take, give freely or be stingy.
In conclusion, God has revealed to us the law that he put in place to prosper us. Our role is to use it to bring prosperity to our lives. I repeat, use it.
