The Beatitude Series – The Poor Need God

3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
Matthew 5:3 (NLT)

I am starting a new series on the famous beatitudes. In this series we will explore what Jesus actually meant by those words and more importantly how are we going to use these verses for our prosperity. As I have mentioned many times before that God expects us to use the Bible. God gave us the Bible for our prosperity. God did not create Man for the Bible. God created the Bible for Man. The Bible is our tool and servant. There no other way that pleases God more that we believers living by faith and use the Bible as he wants us to.

Jesus began by saying God blesses. What happens when God blesses you? As I have shared, when I was in my first church, the word “bless” means nothing. It was as common as “good morning” and “hi”. If you read some of the comments from the theologians, they will tell you that sometimes God can bless you with sickness and poverty. God can sometimes gives you the “grace and mercy to share in the suffering of Christ”. This means God blesses you by doing perverted things on you.

Think about this. Imagine you are God. Will you be pleased when the people you love think of you as a pervert? Every time they face some difficulties in their lives, they will attribute them to you and thank you for giving them the “grace and mercy to share in the suffering of Christ”. This is why theology is nothing more than a lie from the pit of hell. Stay away from theology if you want to please God.

What then is the true meaning of “bless”? What will happen when God blesses someone? Let the Bible tell us.

22 The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
Proverbs 10:22 (NLT)

When Jesus used the word “bless” he was addressing an audience of Jews. In the mind of the Jews, then they heard of that word, they will think of the above verse. The blessing of the Lord always makes a person rich. Not only that, the riches that comes from God’s blessings will not have any side effects like sorrow.

There are 2 parts in Proverbs 10:22. The first part has made it clear that God’s blessing always makes a person rich. In case somebody may ask rich in what area, let me answer that now. Since it does not specify which category of the riches, then it must include every area of life. Jews do not think like the theologians. When a Jew thinks of blessing he will not think of abundance in every area except material riches. Throughout the Bible, God had never excluded material wealth from his blessings. In other words, God’s blessings will make us rich inside and outside.

Carnal minded Christians always worry about being rich materially but poor spiritually. If you are one of them, let me assure you that God knows how to do his job. When he makes you rich, you will be rich materially as well as spiritually. You will not be harmed by it. Your material riches will not bring sorrow to you. God has guaranteed this in the second part of Proverbs 10:22.

Why is the second part needed? Material wealth can be very dangerous to people who are spiritually poor. The world has started to realize that there is a spiritual dimension to riches. Material riches can only be useful to you if you have the spiritual wealth to contain it. Otherwise it will destroy you. You can read about it on people who got rich through lottery, inheritance or any form of dumb luck. They became rich on the outside before they were rich inside them. The result was disastrous.

How will you respond to this? Will you stay poor because there were people harmed by material riches? There was a theologian (who told me he is an engineer) told me that that the world is after riches and they are harmed by it. My reply is so what? Many people have died in road accidents. Will you stop using the road? If you are to obey theology consistently, you will have to do more than just refusing to get rich. You will have to live in Stone Age because all modern facilities we enjoy today had killed someone before.

The bottom line is, if you want to be rich materially, you have to start from becoming rich spiritually. Only then will you be able to enjoy your material riches without being harmed by it. The blessing of God can help you to achieve this.

Let us get back to Matthew 5:3.

Jesus targeted the poor to receive God’s blessings. Other translations used the term “poor in spirit”. It makes no difference. When people are poor materially, they must also be poor spiritually. This is why you cannot overcome poverty by giving money to the poor. After the poor have finished spending the money you gave them, they will be poor again. The only way to eradicate poverty is prosperity. The poor must learn prosperity and be rich spiritually before they can free themselves from the bondage of poverty.

The best way to become rich spiritually is to believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is why Jesus said, “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”

If you are poor, you need to know that God has blessed you with more riches than you can ever dream of and the only way for you to get them is to realize your need for him. You need to trust in him and rely on his faithfulness to bring riches to you. Once you have done that, the Kingdom of Heaven is yours. The Kingdom of Heaven is the opposite of poverty. It is so rich that they use gold to make roads.

In this verse, Jesus was teaching the poor on how to get rich. The poor need to realize their need for God. If you are poor, you need to see God as the source of your prosperity. As I write this, I am fully aware that there are many poor Christians in the world today. You may be one of them. So am I. I am not rich enough.

What should we do? God expects us to be rich. He wants us to rely on him, trust in him and fill our minds with the Kingdom of Heaven. God wants us to think rich. Fill your minds with thoughts on the Kingdom of Heaven. See yourself walking on roads made of gold. This is the way you can be rich inside. Once you are rich inside, you will be rich outside and your riches will not harm you nor cause you any sorrow.

In conclusion, if you are poor or not rich enough, God wants you to be rich. He wants you to rely on him as the source of your prosperity and fill your minds with thoughts of the Kingdom of Heaven. Will you obey?
