Jesus Will Do Greater Works

20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.
John 5:20 (NLT)

Welcome to today’s installment on John 5. This article continues from the one yesterday. Today, we shall study in depth on what Jesus said in the above verse.

In the first part, Jesus is telling us that his Father loves him and showed him all his works. The engineering question here is, so what? What does this Father and Son relationship got to do with me? How can I benefit from this love? The answer lies in the Father’s willingness to sacrifice the Son to pay for the penalty of our sins at the Cross. There is a difference between giving something and giving something you love the most. When God the Father gave us his Son, he gave us the person he loves the most. This tells us how much he truly loves us. How can we use that?

32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?
Romans 8:32 (NLT)

If he can give us Jesus, who he loves the most, what else will he not give us? Do you think he will hesitate giving you a few billion dollars if you ask him for it?

So, don’t be shy in asking from God what you want. The religious people may threaten you with hell but God will never do that. God loves you more than he loves his Sabbath. In the minds of the religious people, the rule says no work on Sabbath. Healing is defined as work. We don’t care how much you are suffering right now, don’t you dare to get healed on Sabbath. However, in the mind of God: I love you more than I love Sabbath. I gave my Son to die for you, not for Sabbath. If I have to break the Sabbath to get you well, I will do it.

This is how much God loves us. He loves us more than he loves his rules. So, go ahead and “break the Sabbath” if it makes you better in your health, wealth, success or any other areas you like. The religious people may threaten you with hell but your God is greater than all of them put together.

In the subsequent part of John 5:20, Jesus said he will do greater works than healing the man to make us astonished. In other words, he will surprise us with greater works. If you subscribed to the lies of religion, the term “greater works” means nothing to you. The “God” of religion is capable of anything, both good and evil. So, in their mind, “greater works” can also means God can give you disease and make you poor. After all, there were many great men of God who lived in sickness and poverty in the past.

This is not the nature of our God. Jesus used the healing of the man as a reference for his greater works. This means, his “greater works” only has one direction, the direction of good and not evil. He will perform more healings and other positive works for us to be truly astonished. Another word for “astonished” is “surprise”. God loves to surprise us with good things. This is good news.

You may be having a bad situation now. You may be very sick and your medical reports say there is no hope for a cure. You may be very poor and laden with so much debt that you don’t see a way out. You may be in a crises and your situation is so bad that no matter where you turn to, you can only see doom. I have good news for you.

God loves to surprise us with good things. He is going to do greater things in your life. He is working behind the scenes right now to give you a great surprise. All you have to do is to hold on to your faith and don’t give up. Keep believing and confessing his goodness. Build up your faith by meditating on the Bible and listening to faith messages. Soon, you will see your breakthrough to all your problems. Our God is a God of surprises.
