We Need To Be Born Again

1 There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee.
2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”
3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
4 “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”
5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.
6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.
7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’
8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”
John 3:1-8 (NLT)

Let us begin with the background story of the above passage. There was a man called Nicodemus. He was a Pharisee. What is a Pharisee? A Pharisee is a religious leader. In today’s context, he may be known as a pastor, priest, bishop, reverend or any religious title you can find. In short, he is a religious guy.

However, just because a man is religious, it does not always means that he is totally in bondage and unable to think. There are still religious people out there who are not in complete bondage and retain some ability to think logically. Nicodemus was one of them.

Deep in his heart, he knew Jesus must come from God because only God can create miracles. He wanted to learn more from Jesus. Unfortunately, he was also a member of the prestigious religious class. He could risk losing his position in the religious hierarchy if he was seen associating with Jesus. His solution was to visit Jesus after dark. Even if somebody spotted him then, the person would not be sure it was him. After all, they did not have streetlights then.

After Nicodemus met Jesus, he greeted the latter and expressed his beliefs on Jesus. However, Jesus said something strange to him. He said, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

The entire passage up to Verse 8 is based on the topic of born again. In this article we shall look deeper into this issue.

What exactly is born again? It is not about joining a religion. It is not about gradually changing. It is about a sudden transformation. When we were born again, something about us has suddenly change. What has changed?

6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.
John 3:6 (NLT)

According to John 3:6, our species have changed. In God’s system, every species reproduce after themselves. Humans can reproduce only human life but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. Unless you are some alien beings reading this blog from a clocked spaceship orbiting somewhere in the Solar System, I shall assume that all my readers are human beings. How did we become humans? Answer: We were born as humans. That is our identity and species. We can never change that no matter how hard we try. So, when Jesus said we must be born again, he was referring to taking up a new identity and species. What species are we supposed to belong to?

When we were first born as babies, our species was based on the species of our parents, which is human. However, when we were born again, according to John 3:6 the Holy Spirit gives birth to our spiritual life. So, our spiritual species must be based on the same species as the Holy Spirit. In other words, spiritually we are gods.

I have written two other articles on this topic of us being gods. This time, I will concentrate on Jesus’s focus in John 3:3-8, which is salvation. When I say “salvation” I am referring specifically to going to heaven. How sure are you that you are going to heaven and not hell after you die?

When I first joined my previous religious church, I learned about salvation by faith. I was told that the moment I believed in Jesus I became a Christian. My place in heaven is secure because Jesus has paid the price for my sins. However, as time passed salvation by faith became salvation by doing what the pastors told me to do. Every Sunday became the day, the pastors came up with new things to do, new requirements to obey and new sins to avoid. Being a Christian became bondage instead of freedom. While there were no direct threats from the pastors that disobeying them will lead me to hell, the overall impression that I got from them was if I don’t obey their instructions, I will have problem with God when I was about to go to heaven.

My belief on salvation by faith was destroyed. At one time I attempted to go for mission at least once because I did not think I could go to heaven without participating in missions. Thank God, he had opened my eyes and helped me to see the lies of religion. When Jesus died at the Cross, he paid for all our sins. Anyone who believes will be saved even if they do not subject themselves to the bondage of religion.

When we were born again in the spirit, we were born again as gods. If you are a god and you are wondering whether you can really go to heaven, you should ask yourself this question, “Can a god go to hell?” If we gods can go to hell, then hell will have to turn to heaven. Satan and his team will have to move elsewhere.

As gods, our rightful and final home is heaven. Heaven is our home. We have our rights there. Some people may feel uncomfortable when I write about our rights in heaven as though I am showing disrespect for God. Let me explain further on this issue.

Assuming that you own a fully paid house. This house belongs to you and you have full rights to it as an owner. You don’t have to give it to me. However, if you have decided to give the house to me and transfer the ownership officially to me, the house becomes mine. I become the owner of this house and I have full rights to do as I please to it. You on the other hand have no more rights to this house. This means you have no right to take back the house because the house is officially mine.

Likewise, God does not have to save us. Yet he did. Once Jesus had died to pay for our sins and we received his salvation by being born again, we became gods. We have all the rights as gods, which includes ownership of heaven. Heaven is now our property. We have the right to go there. This right is based on God’s own law. Therefore, even God cannot deny us of this right. If he does, he will be violating his own laws. Our God is a person of integrity and he obeys his own laws. So, when I write about our rights to go to heaven, my foundation is on the integrity of God.

In conclusion, as long as our God is a person of honor and of integrity, our place in heaven is secure. Do not allow religious people to deny you of your God given rights.
