Though We Stumble We Will Never Fall

23 The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
24 Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.
Psalm 37:23-24 (NLT)

Welcome to the 12th installment on my study of Psalm 37. The Lord directs the steps of the godly. The Lord must be assuming that the godly allows him to do so. God will never force us to do things we are not willing to do. Even when he sent his Son to pay the penalty of our sins, he requires us to receive our salvation willingly without being imposed. Likewise, in his directions for our lives.

When we are being godly, we allow him to direct our steps. Why should we do that? We know he is for us. He loves us and wants to provide the best for us. Therefore his directions will always lead to prosperity. If you want to be rich, obey his directions. If you want to be poor, do the opposite of what he says.

The Lord delights in every detail of their lives. God is a very detailed person in a positive way. His desire is for us to prosper in every area and detail in our lives. He delights in doing so.

Psalm 37:24 tells us that we can stumble from time to time but he guarantees us that we will never fall because he holds us by the hand. In other words, we can be knocked down but we can never be knocked out. We may suffer some setbacks but we can never be defeated.

This reminds me of the story of Job. He had some major setbacks in his life. He lost all his money, children and his health. However, his lost was only for a season. The setback that he suffered from was estimated to last between 9 to 12 months. After the setback, God restored him and gave him double of what he has lost.

The lesson for us here is, even if we stumble and suffer from some setbacks right now, we should not give up. The battle is not over yet. Our God has guaranteed us that, though we stumble, we will never fall. Defeat or failure is not an option for us. Even if you hit the ground, get up and fight again. As long as you keep fighting and don’t lose hope, you will win. We are called to battle and destined to win. No matter what Satan is throwing at us, God has decided that we will win.

The guarantee of us not falling comes with a condition. The second part of Psalm 37:24 gives us the condition that must be met in order to achieve the guarantee of not falling. The condition is we must allow the Lord to hold us by the hand. There are 2 meanings to this.

First, it means intimacy with God. If you are serious about wanting to win over every challenge in your life, you have to spend time with God. You will need to set aside time to pray, listen to faith messages, read the Bible and confess his words. As Christians we are born of God. We were born again into a new species. We belong to the species of gods. As gods, we have all the resources we need to overcome every problem we ever face in our lives. However, having all the resources is useless unless we know how to use them and put them to work. We have to learn to use our godly powers and the only person who is able to teach us how to use them is God. Therefore, spending time with God is vital for our success.

The second meaning of allowing the Lord to hold us by the hand is same as allowing him to direct our steps as in Psalm 37:23. We are willing to allow God to direct our steps because we believe his greatest wish for us is to prosper and be in health as our souls prosper. Following the Lord is surest path to prosperity.
