10 The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.
Proverbs 18:10 (NLT)
The above verse tells us that the name of the Lord is a strong fortress. What is a fortress and why do we need it? A fortress is designed to withstand attacks. As someone who loves action movies, my impression of a fortress is a huge building with thick walls and many guns sticking out. A fortress is located at the place where the enemy is expected to attack and it is usually well stocked with ammunitions and food supply. People in the fortress are aware in their roles and know what to do when they are attacked. When the fortress is under attack, the people inside will not run away. The will run to their respective stations and do what they were trained to do in hitting back the enemy.
This is what God wants to be for us, his children. The fact that the name of the Lord is our strong fortress, tells us that there will be attacks in our lives. The word “strong” implies that the attacks we face can be very strong as well. Why else will God gives us a strong fortress if the enemy is incapable to launch strong attacks on us? So, the bad news here is the moment we have decided to take our faith seriously, we have become the official enemies of Satan.
Satan is afraid that if he allows our faith to grow unchallenged, we will be so powerful that one day we will break into his kingdom, take back all the treasures that he stole from us and demand excessive war reparations from him. He is launching pre-emptive strikes on us. He has and will continue to launch attacks on our health, relationships, finances, careers, businesses and other things that we treasure. No matter what he is attacking, his objective is the same, to get us to give up our faith. Once, we have done so, we will no longer be a threat to him and we will be at his mercy.
However, just because he is doing his best to attack us, it does not mean that he must win. Proverbs 18:10 tells us that the name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. Our God has prepared a strong fortress for us. This fortress is in his name. In his name, we have everything we need to withstand the attacks from Satan. It has unlimited supply of ammunitions that we can fire at the enemy and cause them to flee. As long as we are in this fortress, we are perfectly safe while the enemy will be at the mercy of our weapons.
What is this name, that makes it so powerful? Let us study deeper into the meanings of God’s names.
JEHOVAH-JIREH: “The Lord will Provide.”
God is our provider. He is able and willing to provide everything we desires. Once we understand this, we will never be in lack. Through him we have all the prosperity that we can ever dream of. If you are facing a financial crisis right now, trust in JEHOVAH-JIREH to provide for you, with all the money you need to overcome your situation. As long as you believe and don’t give up, you will see the provision of God in your life.
JEHOVAH-ROPHE: “The Lord Who Heals”
He is our healer. You may be very sick right now. You can feel the sickness. Your doctors may have told you that your disease has reached the terminal stage where there is no cure. According to their professional opinion, you are going to die very soon. You have to understand that the reason why the doctors said what they have said is because they do not know who JEHOVAH-ROPHE is. At the Cross, Jesus took all our sickness and disease. He is more than willing to heal us if we allow him to. All we need to do is to believe in him. In the mind of God, no disease is incurable.
JEHOVAH-NISSI: “The Lord Our Banner.”
Banners were used in ancient warfare to rally and organize the troops for battles. If you are with your banner, you know for sure that you are not alone. You are fighting along with many others who are on your team. You will not feel discouraged but you will have the courage to charge forward and crush the enemy. Therefore, whenever you feel discouraged, turn to JEHOVAH-NISSI. He will give you the strength to fight on because he who is in you is greater than he who is in this world.
JEHOVAH-SHALOM: “The Lord Our Peace”
The situation around you can be very chaotic but you can still have peace inside you. Through JEHOVAH-SHALOM, we can have great peace that enables us to analyze the situation calmly and find the solution to our problems. We will not be agitated, stressed or panic. No matter how bad and impossible the negative situation appears to be, we have the peace and confidence that our God is greater than them all.
In conclusion, there is no safer place to go than the Lord. Through him, we can triumph over every attack Satan launched at us. We are destined to win.
