5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.
Hebrews 11:5 (NLT)
Welcome to the fifth installment on the study of Hebrews 11. In the above verse, we learn about a phenomenon experienced by a man named Enoch. He got to heaven directly without dying. Let us look at the Bible record of this man. There are quite a lot of men with this name in the Bible but there is only one who fits the bill.
23 Enoch lived 365 years,
24 walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him.
The record in Genesis tells us that God took Enoch because of his close fellowship with him. Hebrews 11:5 explains further by saying that Enoch did not go through the stage of death and the verse attributed it to his faith and because he was known as a person who pleased God. This tells us that we do not need to die to go to heaven.
Have you heard of arguments from religious people who defend their right to have diseases and accidents? In the mind of these people, diseases and accidents are necessary to kill them so that they can go to heaven. When they see christians die young, they will make comments like, “God loves this person so much that he took him/her home.” In other words, they were accusing God to be the murderer. God murdered those he loves. If you choose to believe in the lies of these religious folks and want to live long you will have to make God not to love you. Why? If he loves you, he will kill you. This is why religious doctrines are not to be trusted. They were invented by human minds that are deep in bondage.
Yet Hebrews 11:5 tells us that death is not the necessary bridge to heaven. If God is really so pleased with you that he couldn’t wait to bring you to heaven, he will take you up like the way he took Enoch. He will never give you diseases or accidents or send assassins to kill you. The idea God using death to get people to heaven is purely religion.
The second part of Hebrews 11:5 tells us the reason Enoch was taken up to heaven. He was known as a person who pleased God. If you want have a direct access to heaven without going through death, you will have to please God. How are you going please him? You have to live by faith. Verse 6 tells us more about pleasing God by faith, which I will write about it in the next installment.
The question I suspect many will ask is, “Is this for every christian?”. Let me as you back, why did God put Hebrews 11:5 in the Bible? You may be able dismiss Genesis 5:23-24 to be just a historical record with no current implications but the moment God chooses to highlight it in Hebrews 11:5 tells us that he wants us to take it seriously. Why does he want us to take it seriously? Surely his desire is for us to go to heaven the same way. In order to do that we need to strengthen our faith because only through faith will we be able to walk in close fellowship with him and please him. Then we will be able to repeat what Enoch did.
As I was in a religious church before, I am very familiar on how a religious mind work. At this point, a religious person will ask why many faithful christians still died. Surely Hebrews 11:5 must have other meanings. This is a common tactic of religious people. They like to point out to the negative circumstances around them to discredit the Word Of God. When you tell them Jesus took all your diseases at the Cross, they will tell you there are many christians who are sick. When you tell them Jesus died poor at the Cross to make you rich, they will tell you there are many christians who are poor.
If you fall for that, you will never develop the faith God wants you to have. Why not? There are always negative examples out there. Are you going to start believing that Jesus died poor at the Cross to make you rich only after every christian in this world become rich? You might as well throw away the Bible. Who do you really believe anyway, God or the negative examples? If you allow the religious preachers to destroy your faith through the negative examples, you will never be able to please God. You will never enjoy the divine health and abundant prosperity God wants you to have.
So, the choice is yours. Where do you want to put your faith in? The Word Of God or the Word Of Religion?
